[Work, SLO, CA] Disappearance There's nothing like playing a good trick on friends while driving in more than one car on the freeway. There's a trick that I like to do where I speed up and disappear and suddenly appear behind them. I got it to work once in the 15 minutes it takes to get to Pismo Beach from San Luis Obispo, but today is didn't work. This trick works best on long distance drives and you know about the exits in the area you want to do it in. The trick is that I get so far ahead of the other car that they can't see me and take an exit and get back on the freeway a couple second later to come up behind them again and have them eat my dust twice. This didn't work this time because the exit that I took had a stoplight that stayed on red forever. I was there so long that I would not be able to catch up with them before getting to Pismo. It's a really cool game to do. Just pon't get caught by the cops. I'm driving around with a New York license in California and I don' think the highway patrol will like that. Splash Cafe Today was a great day to be outside because the weather was so great. It was one of those "go to the beach" days. A couple of friends and I decided to eat at Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach today. it is the most popular restaurant in the city. Upon arriving we saw the line going around the corner because there were so many people there. It's OK because some of my friend got there a little before us and they were almost tot he counter. The people in my car decided to get in line with them so that we didn't have to wait and we just went in through the rear exit and got in line. They have the best clam chowder that I have ever tasted. It's no wonder they have won the best clam chowder competition for the last 10 years. The clam chowder is served up in great sourdough bread bowls and you can have it served with the optional seafood (imitation crab meat) topping. I also love their clams and chips. Anyway, there were 7 of us and we put our orders in. As we were waiting for our food we went to look for seats. The restaurant is pretty small so finding seats is a little difficult, especially for 7 people. We saw a table where people were getting ready to leave so I decided to pounce on it because there were already other people/scavengers/tourists eyeing it, but I got to it first. The people that were leaving left all of their shit there. The trash was only like 3 feet away from the table, but I was like "Oh well" and called the busboy over as I sat down. It sucks to be a local at a tourist place. posted at 11:04 PM by Super Ben Friday, June 29, 2001 [CCLA@Antioch University, Santa Barbara, CA] Crazy So-Cal Weather As we were leaving sunny San Luis Obispo my eyes just happen to hit the pass through the mountain and saw fog coming over. It was very foggy in Pismo Beach and very cold. I hoped that Santa Barbara wouldn't be like that. We soon passed through the fog and into partly-cloudy Santa Maria. things were starting to look up again. We exited the 101 to the 154 which cut across the mountains and leads directly into Santa Barbara. It was nice and clear up in the mountains and we were hoping to catch a glimpse of Michael Jackson's home in the Santa Ynez Valley. On the way down the mountain one can usually see a beautiful view of Santa Barbara. We saw half of SB and the other half was covered in a thick blanket of fog. We then proceeded to the school and hung out there for a little bit. The sun was shining there. Afterwards we walked to the beach and the fog miraculously burned off at about 3PM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's supposed to be warm in the summer, isn't it? One-Footed Seagull While walking near the end of Santa Barbara Pier I notice a seagull that was flying low. I saw that it only had one foot. My suspicion was confirmed when it landed to get a piece of bread that a little boy threw down. he also noticed that it only had one foot when it was hobbling around to get to the bred that other gulls were after. It's amazing how nature can take its toll and still survive. Tangled Pelican As I was walking back to the street form Santa Barbara Pier, I saw some children feeding pretzels and bread to a group of sea birds. One of the birds that caught my eye was a pelican that was acting rather strangely. Upon closer examination I saw that the pelican was tangled up in fishing wire. Its head and feet were tangled up in it and there was some in its beak as well. I think that it may have also eaten some of it and the fishing wire passed all the way through it.. Fortunately there was a mother and daughter there who also noticed the birds predicament. They tried top help it out as well. They tried to catch it so that they can at least free it up a little bit, but the bird kept going away. They were at it for about 10 minutes, but the bird flew back out into the water and out of their reach. Kudos to the mother daughter pair for helping out this helpless animal. posted at 4:49 PM by Super Ben [California Coast Language Academy, SLO, CA] Unexpected Meetings I came to my other job today so that I could drive students down to Santa Barbara for a day at the beach. As I walked in I was unfamiliar faces at the computers. When they turned around I saw that one of them was my friend Nadine. I thought that I would never see her again because we had her going away party a couple weeks back. She was supposedly touring the US before heading back to Switzerland. I did not expect to see her here today. I've have also run into friends at unexpected places like Disneyland, Universal Studios, and even in other countries like Mexico. It's a great thing to run into others that you think you would never see again. After people leave, one sometimes forgets things to tell them or to ask of them. Seeing them again gives you a chance to finish unfinished business. posted at 11:21 AM by Super Ben [Home, SLO, CA] Fog in the Summer What's the deal with fog in June? It is foggy here right now. I can't see the stars or the moon. It's supposed to be Summer time now. Before I left work today, a man called in to cancel his reservation because his plane never touched down at San Luis Obispo airport because of the thick blanket of fog. I'm supposed to be going to the beach tomorrow in Santa Barbara. The weather here has gone from perfect to cold. The weather here is supposed to be great all year round. I've even gone to Pismo Beach the day after Christmas. It needs to warm up because it is the Summer and I want to go to the beach. I want to go surfing, but I need to learn how to swim first. posted at 12:04 AM by Super Ben Tuesday, June 26, 2001 [At Home] The Impossible I've had the impossible happen to me today. I ate some bad Japanese food at my favorite restaurant, Tsurugi. I think the oil that the "karage" (Japanese-style fried chicken) was fried in was bad. I ate there about 7 hours ago and my stomach still hurts. I felt it as soon as I came home from the restaurant. I didn't want to deal with it so I took a nap to try and sleep it off. I guess it didn't work. posted at 8:54 PM by Super Ben [My Room, SLO] Crazy Dream I actually had this dream early last night. When I woke up from it I decided to put it into my mind to write about it when I got up. This is a dream which has basically been the same but different people have been in. It is very short but there are definitely objects that stand for something. The dream takes place in what seems like my room. It only takes place facing one direction, much like a TV show where you can se in the direction of the camera. My view faces my desk and the window behind it. The window does not lead outside like it does in my room now. It instead leads to another persons room; a room that doesn't; seem familiar to me, but familiar people occupy it. I usually see one person at a time. This window plays a big role because there is always something going through it, both objects and persons. Last night it was a friend throwing her jacket through it and knocking the screen off. She was on the phone and said she was bored and decided to throw it through because I didn't need it there. That was the first time I saw a screen. Other times there is someone trying to escape from the other room into mine or I am trying to escape my room into the other. I don't recall whether I have been in the other room or not. I can't remember whether it's a monster or people that are chasing us. The window is about 3 feet high and 6 feet wide and is about 4 feet off the ground. It is located behind my computer desk. My computer does not appear sometimes when I come to think about it. It is sometimes dark in my room and right behind my chair on the left hand side when facing the computer and window is a deep hole. I have never seen the hold itself, but I know its there because my leg slipped into it last night. Objects would fall into the hole sometimes, but I have never fallen all the way into it. I thought at first the floor was just screwed up and it led under the house, but when we reached into it to fish something out the bottom was nowhere to be felt. There was one time the lights were turned on and when I looked at where it should be carpeting covered it, but I felt the emptiness beneath it. It's funny but my bed isn't in the dream. It should be right next to my desk under the window but it isn't. I also never recall walking through the door to get into my room because it is behind my point-of-view (the camera). Sometimes the window gets broken and sometimes not. Sometimes there is a barrier like bars covering the window so that nothing can pass through. I do remember that one time the window was way up near the veiling and really small like a ventilation window. That time I was trying to escape into the other room. Hmm. That's all I can remember for now. The dream itself doesn't take more than a couple minutes. posted at 8:56 AM by Super Ben Monday, June 25, 2001 [Home, SLO] The Next Adventure What do you think about www.benedictcorpuz.com? I've been thinking about it for a while. It may become a reality soon, but I'm still researching on how I should go about this. I want the world to see who I am. I'm gonna need a lot of space because I have a lot to say. Right now I'm still at version 0.1 beta, not even ready to show it to the public.I need more content and interesting stuff that will set my page apart. I might even give my friends some space on my site and host their pages. I'm off of school this summer so I need something creative to do. That last time I did a page was back in 1996 and I ran into some legal problems. I think it's about time to get back into the mix. Gotta relearn HTML and learn Flash. Looks like I have a lot to do. posted at 11:55 PM by Super Ben Sunday, June 24, 2001 [At work, Holiday Inn Express, San Luis Obispo] My poor hand I burned my fingers in scalding hot water just a couple moments ago. I got a call at the front desk from a guest who couldn't figure out the faucet in the bathroom and tried to help her out over the phone. She had already tried everything that I suggested so I decided to go to the room because she didn't want to "cook her kids" in the bathtub. I go into the room and try to figure it out. After messing with it and burning my hand in the process, I finally get it into a position where the water temperature is acceptable. As I'm walking back to the desk I passed by the Ice Machine and decided to get a little bit for my hand. The noise scared the shit out of a girl that was talking on the payphone. This is gonna be a long night. posted at 11:33 PM by Super Ben [My Room, San Luis Obispo, CA] My First Blog After reading the Blogs of other people I was inspired to start writing my own. It took me a while to finally get this up but I finally go it working. I started the process at about 3:00 AM while I was at work at the Holiday Inn Express and didn't get it right until after I had gotten home at 8:25. I really wanted to get this out so I tried all sorts of ways to get it to access right. It's OK now because you can now read this. Optimistic Pessimism was the title of a fanzine that I worked on a couple years ago at Edison High School with a friend of mine named Brian Brown. I wonder whatever happened to that guy? Anyways for you illiterate types, Optimistic Pessimism is an "oxymoron." What is an oxymoron you ask. It is a phrase that contradicts itself. Optimistic (positive outlook on things) Pessimism (negative outlook on things). I chose to use this title for my Blogs because Blogs are a glimpse into our mixed up confused minds. When other people read our Blogs the reader may or may not understand what Blogger is writing about. Well I'm just glad to get this up. I am now ready for bed because I worked the 11PM to 7AM shift doing the nightly audit for the hotel. A hint for you folks out there. Keep asking for a discount at hotels, they will eventually give in. Hotels make mad cash and can afford $10 or $20 off rooms. And that Energy Surcharge being put onto hotel rooms is total Bullshit! It is just pure profit for the hotel. Californians vacationing in California have to pay twice for the energy crisis. Once at home, and then the $2-5 energy surcharge at hotels, but don't forget the increase in prices everywhere else like the gas station. We're not all gonna make it!!!!!! Not bad for my first blog. Stay tuned for more. posted at 8:47 AM by Super Ben |
