[Work, SLO, CA] 10-10-220 The commercials for this company are really stupid. Dollar this, dollar that! I tell people to use 10-10-811 all the time. They are a lot cheaper. With 10-10-220 the minimum charge is 20 minute which cost about $0.99 and $0.07 per minute after that. If you were to call someone and they werent home but someone answered, that minute would count at 20 becuase the minimum is 20 minutes. You'd pay $0.99 for a 1 minute call. With 10-10-811 the minimum is 3 minutes and you only get charged $0.05 per minute. A one minute call would cost only $0.15 which each minute after 4 costing only $0.05 each. Let's break it down. ----------------Minimum call-----Minimum Cost 10-10-220----------20 mins-------------$0.99 10-10-811-----------3 mins-------------$0.15 {------WINNER Extra minutes 10-10-220-----$0.07 per minute-----30 minute call is---$1.69 10-10-811-----$0.05 per minute-------------------------$1.30{----WINNER One can clearly see the better deal. posted at 11:43 PM by Super Ben Friday, September 28, 2001 [Brother's and Sister's Apartment, Berkeley, CA] Taller I drove to Berkeley today with my friend Kaori so that we could deliver a TV and a computer I built for my brother. While I was setting up, Kaori noticed some yellow dots on the wall and asked my brother, Brian, about them. He told me that it was an experiment to measure the difference in height before and after sleeping. He simply placed a sticker dot as high as he could on a wall before he went to sleep, but after the compacting of the cartilege in his vertebra from the day. in the morning after his sleep and expansion of his spinal cartilage, he had at least 2.5 inches more height when he reached up to put the sticker. I thought that this was really interesting. I should try that experiement out to see how much of a difference there is before nad after I sleep. Sony Flat Panel LCD Monitor On the way up to Berkeley, we had stopped in Salinas. I looking for a Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, or Best Buy to buy a monitor for my brother. I found him a really good 17 inch monitor at Circuit City and bought that for him. Another object caught my eye. There was a Sony Flat Panel monitor sitting on the bottom shelf near the floor. It was the 15" Sony SDM-M51. I asked the salesperson questions about it and decided that I wanted to buy it. He told me that it was $479, but he lowered it ti $449 and it also had a $50 rebate. I got a really good deal on it. I think I might ebay this and make a little cash before deciding on really getting one. posted at 10:44 PM by Super Ben [Home, SLO, CA] Fortune Cookie Today I at at a Chinese restaurant with a group of my friends. I was the only one competent enough with English to explain the meanings of the sometimes-not-direct fortunes in the fortune cookies. The one I recieved read: "Love is around the corner." It sounded really good to me, but when I stepped outside and looked around the corner there was no one there. posted at 2:55 PM by Super Ben Thursday, September 27, 2001 [Home, SLO, CA] Enterprise Tonight was to be the night that the new Star Trek show, Enterprise, was to premiere. I didn't think it was going to be shown so I stayed at work for a little while longer. I tried looking for UPN on our cable system a couple days ago, but it was nowhere to be found. I called the cable company and they told me that the new channel that they picked up used to have it, but didn't notify the cable company when they dropped it making San Luis Obispo UPN-less. I called my sister the night before and asked her to record it for me because I wasn't going to see it. Anyways, I was to be off from work at 8PM, but I had planned to elave a little early a week before so that I could be home in time for the show. I eneded up staying at work until 8:35 because there was nothing I needed to do at home. And then when I was climbing the stairs to my apartment, I glanced into the window of one of my neighbors when my brain recognized that the image on TV was Scott Bakula in uniform. I then quickly rushed to my door and unlocked it, then turned on the TV. I knew that we didn't have UPN so I didn't know which station to tune in to. I clicked away and finaly found it. I was 40 minutes into the show but at least I was watching it. And fortunately I didn't miss the semi-sex scene where some of the actors rub each other down. Trekkies I'm a Trekkie, but not a hard core Trekkie. I do show that I am a fan of the show. I wear a Starfleet badge on my uniform at work. In my closet I do have a Star Trek Uniform. I've also found fans of the show tha tI would never think to be fans. I guess there are a lot of closet trekkies out there. One reason I like Star Trek is that the series gives us, as humans, a good outlook on the future, where humanity is mostly united. We also get a lot of gadgets from the show that actually turn into real things. Look at our PDAs from today, just like tri-corders or PADDs from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Hyperspace There is a book by Michio Kaku called Hyperspace. In it he discusses "String Theory" and how that theory will unite all fields of schience and explain our existence. His work is based on the work of the late Albert Einsten. Finding that equation would open up all sorts of possibilities for us. Everything that we see in Star Trek will no longer be science fiction, but science reality. posted at 11:35 PM by Super Ben Wednesday, September 26, 2001 [Home, SLO, CA] Walking My leg muscles are so sore. I've been walking so much recently. CalPoly is a really large school and the parking sucks. I hate having to drive around for half an hour to find parking. When I do find a spot, it just happens to be on the opposite side of campus as my class. I should have picked different times to take my classes. We need shuttles or something to take us to our classes. posted at 11:11 PM by Super Ben [Home, SLO, CA] New Friends My friend Yuki came to San Luis Obispo on a visit and was staying with some friends of his. I went with him to their house and I knew a couple of the people and met some of the others for the first time. They were all CalPoly students. They're all pretty cool. They live in the apartment complex behind the place that I work. I'll probably be seeing more of them in the upcoming year. High School Stories My new friends we easily amused with stories from my high school days. Maybe I'll make a section on my site with short stories about them. It wasn'y just high school stories, but also stuff that I have gone through recently. Maybe I'll write a book or something. My friend Shira said that she may use me for material in her writing. Why not? posted at 2:21 AM by Super Ben Tuesday, September 25, 2001 [Home, SLO, CA] Second Day of School I was off to an early start today as my classes ran from 9-11:00am and then 1:30-6:00pm. Today it only took me 25 minutes to find parking and that was about my only problem. It was a very long day. I did see my friend Elly today. She is the one that I would play the game with last year of counting the time till the next time we would see each other. today we had some of the shortest times. I saw her the first time when she was trying to crash the Philosophy class that I was in. She couldn't add it because it was full. I saw her after class walking towards the University Union the second time. Then after lunch she was in my Physical Science class trying to add that too. Three times in one day is pretty much our record. Our game is a little fixed now because we share the same class now. My Classes My Philosophy class is pretty cool. I find it pretty interesting. Hopefully it'll provoke some deep thought. Physical Science is pretty boring. It seems like my Physical Science class from my freshman year in high school. As for my biology lab... I think that 3 hours is way too long. Biology Biology is a cool subjectbut the 2 hour labis way too long. We had an assessment (non-graded) test today. I pretty much passed it. I didn't answer 2 out of the 20 presented. I think that this will be the same classification work as I did in my high school biology class. My high school Biology class was one class that really prepared me for college. It was taight exactly like a college course is taught. In my college class right now, one of the projects is to make a bug collection. I totally do not want to do that. I'm not afraid of bugs or anything, but I would rather not kill 30 diferent insects to do so and then mount them for display. It goes against my adopted Buddhist beliefs. It's ok to kill bugs on accident, but not when it is intentional. Gotta Catch 'em All There was one remark that my Biology teacher made that really cracked me up. She told us that some of us would get better catches than others and vice-versa. it reminded me of the principles of Pokemon and the trading of pokemon. Bug catching and trading was the premise for which the creator of Pokemon created it. posted at 5:27 PM by Super Ben [Work, SLO, CA] First Day of School Today was the first day of school of my 4th year of college at CalPoly State University. Even though I only had one class today, I didn't want to go. It felt good to be back at school, but I didn't like the fact that I had to go to class again. There were so many people at school today. That'll uickly die down when the freshmen figure out that you don't have to go to class. One can totally tell who the freshman are. They are the ones that try to hard to look good. this is not high school anymore. All other students don't really care. I don't mean don't care, but not as much as the Freshman. Parking It took me 40 minutes to find parking. My class started at 12:10 so I figured that I could go to school early in hopes of seeing friends. I got to campus about 11:25 and drove into the new parking structure that was supposed to have eased the parking problem on campus. I drove through all 4 levels and didn't find any parking. I then rove to the back parking lot and drove around for a while. I even went to Mickey Mouse Parking way over by the Equestrian Unit. The dirt by the side of the road was taken up too. so I drove back to the front of the back lot and drove around when I finally found an open spot. I took it right away and ran to class. Knowing People They say that you know the most people in your sophomore and junior years. For me that was true. Wherever I went on campus I saw someone I knew. During my freshman year I didn't know anyone. By this time, most of the people I know have already graduated. I saw only 2 people today that I knew, but they were too far for me to say hi. There is one person that i used to run into all the time, but I didn't see her today. We made a game of seeing each other. We would set the time and se how long it would take before we would see each other again. posted at 12:35 AM by Super Ben Monday, September 24, 2001 [Work. SLO, CA] Internet Access It sucks not having internet access here at work. What else am I supposed to do while waiting for the sun to come back up. It took me 2 hours before I could finally get this computer to connect. The problem is the dialer had the wrong access number. I didn't notice until a lot later (now). So I jsut changed the number and here I am typing away. Up until I figured that out, I thought that my night was going to drag on and on and on. I am so dependent on internet access. I wouldn't know what to do without access to it. posted at 12:29 AM by Super Ben |
