[Ratsamy's Place, Astoria, NY] 19:31EST Wandering I really had no plans for today so I just decided to wander. I first stopped at Madison Square Garden and then got back onto the train. I made my way to Grand Central Station after that. The place is huge. I found the unrestored spot on the ceiling and there is a really big diference in the old and new. I left Grand Central and walked some more. I stopped at a Japanese bookstore and tehn walked for more after taht. I came upon Rockafeller Center and the NBC studios. I got hungry so I grabbed a NY Hot Dog. A couple blocks down I got a NY Sausage. Then I came upon Radio City Music Halls and St. Paul's Chapel. Befoe I kew it I ended up back in Times Square. I wanted to go see what Broadways shows were plaing bu the lines were to long. I wanted to go see a movie, bu then a guy with a cart had tapes sitting out and was selling current movies. I got 2 copies fo Donnie Darko and a copy of Iron Monkey. I also got I Love NY t-shirts for people back home. posted at 4:38 PM by Super Ben Friday, November 02, 2001 [Lerner Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY] 15:16 EST Grad Tour As I was exiting the cafe, I spotted this open computer terminal and decided that I wanted to write a Blog. I lost track of time yesterday and missed the Grad school tour, but today I made it with more than enough time. Before the tour though I had enough time to go ask questions at the Liberal Studies office. He gave me some really promising answers. He said that only 20 0r 30 people apply every year for the East Asian Regional Studies Graduate School Program, and that half get accespted. This is a lot better than the transfer student admit rate of >5%. I also asked if I was ok for me to apply a couple years after completion of my BA at CalPoly and then teaching in Japan. He told me that it depends on the specific school, but that in my situation it would be beneficial. Hopes are really loking god for me. posted at 12:16 PM by Super Ben [Ratsamy's Place, Astoria, NY] 11:18 EST Tap Water I woke up and brushed my teeth and I noticed that the tap water here tastes completely different that it does in California. I can't really say whether it is better or not because water is water. My problem with this is that they are different, not good or bad. Anyway's time to head out... posted at 8:18 AM by Super Ben Thursday, November 01, 2001 [Ratsamy's Apartment, Astoria, NY] 00:31 Empire State I decided to go wander around downtown after leaving Columbia University. I got off at 50th street and then walked down towards Times Square. From Times Square, I saw the Empire State building and decided to walk towards it. By the time I got to the building I had walked so many blocks. I believe it is located on 34th street, which means I walked 16 blocks to New York's tallest building from the 50th street station. I have some beautiful night shots of the World Trade Center clean-up site. My camera has a really good night shot feature. The building is lit up with red, white, and blue to honor those lost in the Sept. 11 attack. It is usually only those colors at certain times of the year. posted at 9:29 PM by Super Ben [Lowe Library, Columbia University, NY, NY] 12:38PM Wandering Through Harlem I took an express train to the university and I somehow ended up in Harlem. I got off the Number 3 train at 116th St. and expected to see Columbia University when I exited the station. Instead I ended up in a place that I totally did not expect. I saw many Black people around and lot's of friend chicken places and figured that I was in Harlem. I asked someone where Columbia University is and they told me that it was down the street and across the park. When he said park I thought he meant Central Park. I though I completely blew it on the train and ended up in a completely different part of Manhattan than I expected. I was just some rinky-dink park that I had to climb upppp through to get to the campus. I'm just waiting now for the Graduate School tour. posted at 9:41 AM by Super Ben Wednesday, October 31, 2001 [Ratsamy's Apartment, Astoria, NY] 2:09AM EST Subway Peeps There are a lot of crazy people on the subway. Be sure to look out for my People Wpage to see what kind of Characters I encountered while on my trip to New York. Faces & Names Rat's brought me to a bar because we were to meet up with some friends there. I've never really gone to a bar in the US. This is my first really official Bar experiece sine I turned 21. I did go to a bar in Japan, but I was still 20 at the time. Her friend assured me that this wouldn't be the only time that I would go while I am here. posted at 11:07 PM by Super Ben [AT&T Wireless in Macy's, Queens, NY] 6:57PM EST Finally In New York After a long ass flight I am finally here. My friend Ratsamy from high school had her friend, Eddy pick me up from the airport. We dropped my shit off at her house and then we headed to her work so tha tI could go see her. The people I was originally supposed to meet aren't answwering their phones. They are probably out somewhere. So here I am just kickin it in the store.I gotta hang out here till she gets out of work and then we're gonna head out into the city. People on the Plane The people tath you see and meet on the airplane are very interesting. The couple in front of me must hae just gotten married or something becuase they were making out the whole time. Behind me was aguy that kept chatting away with a bunch of small talk to a very cute girl sitting next to him. I sat next to the window because i like to look outside the plane at the American landscape. Next to me sat a businessman who worked the whole trip. A couple of minutes into the flight he needed more space so he moved to another seat where he could utilize the empty seat next to him to lay his work down. Across a way was a lucky individual in the aisle seats who had 3 seats to himself. He got to lie down and sleep across all three. More on my people watching later... posted at 3:57 PM by Super Ben [Home, SLO, CA] Flying Again I am flying again after not flying for a year. I'm gonna take advanteage of this "mid-quarter break" that I made up for myself. Gonna head to the Halloween parare up in the village. The I'mm gonna go meet my friend and have fun. Gotta go now or I'm gonna be late for my plane. posted at 6:10 AM by Super Ben Sunday, October 28, 2001 [Holiday Inn Express, SLO, CA] More Sushi Since we had some fish left over last night, Shira and Debbie decided to have another sushi night. I couldn't go this time, but they still had some left over. They decided to make some for me and bring it to my work. They only live next door to my place of business so it was no trouble for them. They even brought me some sake to go along with the sushi. It was a nice little surprise to have them bring this to me. Time Traveling Again Living this hour twice again really didn't do much for me since I was stuck here at work. I was writing about not having time a couple days ago and now I have (had) extra time and wasn't able to do anything with it. This extra time jsut got put into work. I don't really know right now whether that is good or bad. I get extra pay on one hand, but I have to stay here longer on the other. posted at 1:58 AM by Super Ben |
